Kukke Subramanya

Subramanya , localy known as Kukke Subramanya is a Hindu temple situated in the wilderness of the western ghats. Its a village in sullya taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. The temple is one of the unspoiled pilgrimage locations of India. The Lord worshipped here Subramanya is known to be the Lord of serpents. The epics of hinduism say the divine serpent Vasuki and other serpents found shelter under Lord Subramanya when they were in threat of Garuda. The route to subramanya is serene in itself and amazes you with the beauty of the wilderness. You will be advised to take a dip in the kumardhara river before  entering the temple. The speciality of this temple is that even muslims come here and pray. Thats the beauty and unity of dakshina kannada people.

Dharmasthala Temple

Dharmastala represents religious tolerance. A Jain Tirthankara is worshipped beside Daivas and Lord Manjunatha. The priests in Dharmasthala Temple are Vaishnavite Brahmins and the protector of the temple a Heggade. Dharmasthala Temple which houses the shrine of Shiva,Manjunatha, Ammanavaru, Chandranath and the Dharma Daivas namely Kalarahu, Kalarkayi, Kumaraswamy and Kanyakumari. The temple is curious in that it is run by a Jain administration and poojas are conducted by Hindu priests of Madhva order. Lakshadeepa- the festival of lights is the annual festival of Dharmasthala comes off in November–December. On an average the flow of pilgrims is about 10,000 people a day. A mechanized kitchen provides free food for all pilgrims and there are guest houses with contemporary amenities.

St Aloysius Chapel

St Aloysius Chapel is one of the most important places of attraction in the city of Mangalore. The chapel is situated at the center region of the city on a hill famous in the region as the lighthouse hill. The place is easily communicable. Sultan Battery

Sultan Battery is located at Boloor in Mangalore city. The place is famous for the watch tower situated amidst the beauty of nature allegedly constructed by the king Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan built the tower 15 years prior to his death in 1784 A.D. The place was earlier known as Sultan’s Battery, the word Battery gives the meaning as firing of canons.

There is an underground storage space under the tower which was used to store up gun powder. This reminds us of the significance the place detained as it was the major dockyard and weapon store of the ruler. It was also a marine station and this place was of great significance to the ruler as he used it to intercept enemy warships from docking.
If one climbs to the top of the watch tower by staircases, he can get a panoramic view of Arabian Sea which leaves the nature lovers in limitless joy. This place is a mix of natural and manmade beauty. It is now a deserted place but is gaining popularity among tourists because of the invading endless bliss of the nature.

Tannirbavi

One of the best beaches of Dakshina Kannada is Tannirbavi. It is situated at a distance of few kilometers from Mangalore. Tannirbavi Beach is the asset of Mangalore port trust.

Panambur beach

Panambur beach is the place of New Mangalore Port. It is sited in Dakshina Kannada north of the Gurupura river. The name Panambur is derived from ‘Panam’ which means Money and the word ‘Ur’ means place or village in Tulu language.
It was inaugurated in 1974 by the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The port situated in Panambur is called New Mangalore Port, as there is an old harbour or port located in Mangalore city which is called by Mangalore bunder or Hale bunder. Old port is now being used for fishing and for shipping small goods.
There is a Nandaneshwara temple in Panambur. There is a beautiful beach on the shoreline of the Arabian Sea at Tanniru Bhavi resided to the south of sea port at Panambur.
New Mangalore Port Trust runs the deep-water, all-weather port at Panambur. It is the only chief port of Karnataka and is at present the ninth largest port in India.
Panambur beach offers Jet ski rides, camel rides for kids, boating, Dolphin viewing, Food stall, ice-cream, skilled Beach Life-guards for safety.
The beach provides facilities for Parties, events, get together, meetings and weddings. It is the only beach in India that is managed and run by a private enterprise for tourism improvement.

Someshwar Beach

Someshwar Beach is located near the convergence of the Nethravathi River and the Arabian Sea, in Ullal and it is a pristine beach famous for its view of sunsets. The beach is famous for large rocks called ‘Rudra Shile’ and are major highlights of the beach. During high tide, the spectacle of waves dashing against the rocks reminds a feeling of awe for the power of Nature. The golden sands, greenery along route from Mangalore, and the coconut palms along the beach make this beach a must-visit destination on the traveler’s journey.

Ullal

Ullal town is one of the oldest towns in India. In 15th century it came under the rules of Portuguese. It is a fishing village and located few kilometers away from Mangalore on the south banks of river Nethravathi. The majority of the people in ullal belong to either beary or Mogaveera ethnic group. This Town is a vital trading centre for fish and fish compost. Fishing and Beedi rolling are main occupations of the residents of this town.

Surathkal

Surathkal is on the coast of the Arabian Sea and brags of having beautiful beaches offering a just right holiday destination for tourists.
The beach name Surathkal is derived from the word “Shiradakal” which gives the meaning as headstone in Kannada and in Tulu.
This beach has a curvature shoreline and has a lighthouse at the end of the beach. The lighthouse is located on a rocky hillock and presents a continuous view of the landscape and sea around. The lighthouse is open to visitors between 4pm and 5 pm.
The traveler should absolutely stay back to see the sunset from this beach. The mornings fetch in fishermen from the neighbouring villages that start their fishing boats into the sea.
The Beach is widely visited for the light house that is situated in this region of the city. The lighthouse is a must-visit for those who like a dash of thrill in their lives. This lighthouse is situated in the midst of rocks. It offers a spectacular view from the top, of the region around.

Polali temple

Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple is a temple located in Polali, Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. Shri Kshetra Polali temple is in the heart of this village bordered by tall hillocks and wide paddy fields. River Phalguni flows in the premises of temple.
Polali is an ancient temple. The prime goddess of the temple is Shri Rajarajeshwari. The temple was built in the 8th century AD by King Suratha and has been developed by many dynasties which ruled over the region. The idol of Shri Rajarajeshwari is entirely molded from clay with special medicinal properties. The temple depicts Hindu architecture with roofs decorated with wooden carvings of gods and copper plates.
Lord Mahaganapathi, Lord Subrahmanya, Goddess Bhadrakali and Goddess Saraswathi are other idols adorn the sanctum sanctorum.

Milagris church

The Milagris Church is a historic Roman Catholic Church; the Church of Lady of Miracles is a central attraction in Mangalore. It is located in the Hampankatta region of Mangalore. The church was constructed in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine from Divar, Goa. It is believed that the soldiers of Tipu Sultan formerly destroyed some parts of the church – the stones were utilized by Tipu to construct the Idgah on Lighthouse Hill.
After the death of Rev. Fr. Thomas de Castro on 16 July 1684, was buried in the Milagres Cemetery. Following the destruction of the original church by Tippu Sultan, it was re-built in 1811. The original structure was constructed at the place of the present-day cemetery. It is one of the oldest churches in Dakshina Kannada.
Milagres Church is considered as one of the beautiful creative houses of prayer in Mangalore implanted with architectural beauty. The church has an excellent altar with a French painting of St Monica and St Augustine; it’s really a splendid rare piece of art worth visiting.

Ullal Darga

The Ullal darga famed for Uroos fair has an interesting history behind its presence. The darga is easily reachable by buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis.
The Dargah to commemorate Saint Sayyid Mohammed Shareeful Madani, located in Ullal, has been drawing pilgrims from all faiths. Legend has it that about 400 years ago, Sayyid Muhammed Shareeful Madani came to Mangalore from Saudi Arabia, reaching the seashores of Ullal by floating on a piece of cloth. He camped in a petite mosque at Melangadi in Ullal village where he led a simple life showing his love on the poor.

St Aloysius church

St Aloysius church is located a kilometer away from Nehru Maidan. The Church was built in the year 1899-1900. The walls of the church are covered with the paintings of the artist Antony Moshaini of Italy. It is comparable with the Sistine chapel in Rome. The special beauty of the chapel is the superb sequence of paintings that nearly cover every inch of the interior roof and walls executed by Bro. Moscheni trained in Italy.
The center row of paintings on the ceiling portrays the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom College and Chapel is dedicated.

Seemanthi Bai Government Museum

Seemanthi Bai Government Museum is located in Bejai some kilometers away from Nehru Maidan city Bus Stand. Here we can get to see the idols, materials of historical importance.

Kadri Park

The Kadri Park is located in little distance away from main City Bus Stand. We get to see the main tourist attractions like Snakes & Animals Zoo, Toy Train and the beautiful garden.

Light House Hill-Garden

One can see the beautiful sea view from this Light House Hill-Garden. The visitor can see the beautiful sunset view, the sailing ships and boats on the sea. The garden is now renovated and it looks more beautiful.

Rosario church

The Rosario Church is also known as the Rosario Cathedral. This church is the oldest one and built by Portuguese in the year 1568.
The Church was rebuilt in 1910. Its gorgeous design is in Roman style. It is located near Hampankatta of Mangalore city and is very calm and cool place. It is one of the three most primordial churches in the diocese and Pietro della Valle, the Italian traveller who visited Mangalore in 1623 states these three churches, that of the Holy Rosary at Bolar, the Lady of Mercy at Ullal and of St Francis of Assisi at Farangipet. He mentioned regarding the existence of these 3 churches.
The Holy See selected Thomas De Castro a native of Divar in Goa Vicar Apostolic of Kanara on 30th August 1675.

Shri Venkataramana temple Mulki

Shri Venkataramana temple Mulki: Sri Ugra Narasimha the famous deity has eight hands, stands on one leg, has three eyes, has got nabhi kamala and is portrayed manslaughter the demon Hiranyakashipu with his nails. This unique idol is considered Swayambhu and legend has it that it was worshipped by Prahlad. It was sanctified here by Sri Vijayaendra Thirtha swamiji more than 5 centuries back.
Lord Venkatarama along with his wives Sridevi and Bhudevi also grace the Sanctum here. This idol is originally from Karkala.
Lord Bindu Madhav is the Utsav diety. This idol was found by Sri Madhavendra Thirtha Swamiji in the holy Ganges at Varanasi. They sacred it here in the 18th century and also started the various utsavs.
The first idol to be consecrated here was Vittala. This was brought at this point by GSB family that was invited by the local chieftain in the early 13th century. The temple was then called as Vittala Gudi.

Mangala Devi

The city Mangalore is called just because of Mangala Devi temple. This temple was built by the Ballal family of Attavar in memory of a Princess of Kerala.

The temple is located in Bolar about few kms from Hampankatta, the temple has its roots into the ninth century. The fervent devotees still today believe that the worship of Mangaldevi brings them wealth and happiness.

In Tulunadu, Kundavarma, the most famous king of Ahepa dynasty was ruling. At that time two holy saints came there of the natha cult named Machendranatha and Gorakanatha from Nepal. By knowing about the advent of the two saints the king came to meet them. Introducing himself as the king of Tulunadu, his respects and offered them all help and patronage. Satisfied with the humbleness and qualities of the king they bought to his knowledge that his kingdom was a emptied place and it was sacred by the activities of holy saints and sages in the past. They requested him to grant them land so that they could build their hermitage and make it a center if their religous activities under his protection and benefaction.

Kadri Temple

The temple of Manjunatheshwara on the hills of Kadri is a very beautiful and admired temple in Mangalore. It is said to be built during the 10th or 11th century. It was renewed to a complete stone structure during the 14th century. The idol of Lord Manjunathaswamy of the temple is called as oldest of the South Indian Temples.

It is believed that Parashurama who was living in Sahyadri, killed the kshathriyas who were cruel and donated the lands to Kashyapa. He prayed to Lord Shiva for a place to live. Lord Shiva guaranteed Parashurama that if he performed a penance at Kadali kshethra, Lord Shiva would bring back as Manjunatha for the betterment of the world.

Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple

Mangalore is recognized as a pilgrim center and boasts of various sacred temples like Sharavu, Kadri, Mangaladevi, Kudroli etc. Out of these Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara – Sri Mahaganapathy Kshetra is an excellent, religious center of great memorable history of marathon 800 years. Because the temple Sri Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple is located in the heart of the city, locating and reaching the temple is very easy. It is at a walking distance from Hampankatta and also can comfortably reached by autorickhaws.

Kudroli Temple

Kudroli Sri Gokarnath temple has been renovated recently and present it is one of the tourist attraction places in Mangalore. A grand Dassahra festival is held every year in this Kudroli temple. This time the whole Mangalore city will shine with lighting. Visitors from local and worldwide will come to see this beautiful attraction of the Mangalore city.

Bappanadu temple

There is a famous saying in Tulunadu –” Go and beat dolu at Bappanadu”. It specifies that the person concerned is good for nothing and does useless work. Bappanadu’s drum is said to be fairly oversized and has been displayed at Karavali Utsav exhibition in Mangalore as one of the heritage pieces of Tulunadu. Beyond the drum, the Bappanadu temple itself has a history of about 800 years. Its main deity is Durga Parameshwari and the sub divinity is Ganesh. How the temple is founded and built with the help of a Muslim trader is described in legend and folklore. with very involved episodes.

Pilikula

Pilikula Nisarga Dhama (Pilikula) is a major eco-education and tourism development project promoted by the District Administration of Dakshina Kannada in the beautiful city of Mangalore in Karnataka State, India.

An integrated theme park with a wide variety of features, Pilikula has many attractions of cultural, educational and scientific interest. The park is spread over an area of 370 acres comprising of a tropical forest and the enchanting Pilikula Lake. The project presently includes a Biological Park, Arboretum, a Science Centre, a Lake Park with Boating Centre, a Water Amusement Park and a Golf Course. Other features which are currently being developed include a Heritage Village, an Ayurveda Health Therapy Centre and Tourist Cottages
